Imagine eldritch gods the size of small stars composed entirely of decomposing human bodies mashed together into some sort of manipulative entity. Is this too bland? Entities so horrific in the matter of physical appearance that merely peering at them would cause you to have an intense seizure? Perhaps you wish for me to recount the appearance of entities so startlingly incomprehensible that their mere presence within an astronomical unit would cause you to have vivid sensory hallucinations to the brink of insanity?

Indeed. Such things are worse abominations, but lesser ones still deserve the title, I feel. Incidentally, the Servo-Skull I provided as a reference image up there still has a partially-aware, enslaved human brain inside. 'Parently the Imperium prefers zombies to robots. Go figure.

Terribly sorry. However, I think I've proved my point, though I have not yet even discussed the smallest of the Smaller Gods.

Then, realize that the (center of the) entity in question is several hundreds of billions of au away, suffering major brain damage all the while, due to attempting to comprehend the form it has adapted to in your presence. Fortunately, that would not affect Earth, as it is too far away, and the beings in question would much prefer manipulation over brute force. Luckily, we are not speaking of Azathoth.

First of all, that politically incorrect word is extremely offensive; please don't use it again. Secondly, I was referring to what would occur if you entered their range of influence. Reread my post if you do not understand it.

Yeah... the thing is that those abominations causing the insanity is a hardware problem, not a software problem. If you can modify your own brain (or already have one complex enough) you can easily build yourself up to the point where eldritch abominations have no effect on you. It takes a while to be able to make sense, but the insanity is an effect not on your soul or consciousness, but rather upon your physical brain. Sort of like psionic radiation of a sort.
Some of them do look pretty horrible, but the horrible look is completely coincidental, the effect the true form of Greek gods has upon mortals is the same thing, just with a shorter range and more intense effects.

Depends which we are talking about. Desensitization is the key, I think. With the abominations I regularly speak of, it is not usually the appearance, though it could give you a minor seizure, that is the cause of insanity. The voices surrounding them are another story entirely.
