To explain, the more long-lived a race is, the less... err... Fertile they are. Let's say an Elvish couple lived together for 1500 years. In that time, they would probably have 0-2 children. Anyways, most elves usually have a rather disassociated relationship with their craft. To put it bluntly, human romance is idiotic, but easy to follow, unlike troll romance, which is slightly less idiotic, but more complicated. I would say love is any strongly-felt emotion directed at another being. Sentient beings classify as beings like humanoids, aliens, and anything that has a language and culture. It also classifies as a pet. You are caring enough to voice anger at them, and not acting like an emotionless stoic. This is the basis of High Elven romance, but I haven't the slightest idea about Gray Elven, Drow, or other elvish styles. Actually, that is a lie, but I do not wish to speak about them.

Actually serpent, that isn't the case. piono was deliberately enraging Eric, and Eric was just trying to put up with him for old times' sake and the fact that he felt responsible for piono, being his creator and all. Before the whole series of events that ruined their relationship happened, they were just friends. To quote Hatch's Order of Magnitude, they would have ranked at Platonic Life Partners, like that one friend you meet in high school or college and find yourself hanging out with for the rest of your life.
And Moirailleigence is something that isn't unique to trolls, its just that it takes on a more 'singular' form among them. Matespritship works mostly the same as human romance. The Kissemessitude isn't really compatible with humans, but because of the fact that sentient beings are very flexible, it would be possible for a human to fall into a hate-crush at the very least. It happens sometimes, but because of the basic nature of human psychology it will usually not work or turn into regular romance. Auspitism is once again just something that happens normally turned into a more powerful form of emotion. The first three are mainly powerful versions of the three forms of relationship that are universal to most sentient beings, and capable of all of them. Love, friendship, and hate.
Love is when you care about someone a lot as a person, and are willing to sacrifice yourself greatly for that person. There are a handful of species that due to meddling from outside forces do not have the innate capacity for love, but it is still possible to enable individuals to access these emotions. Friendship is capable of almost all. It is a basic connection felt with someone. You wish for their well-being, or at least their continued existence. This applies to things such as rivalries as well, because friendship on its own without any measure of love results in things like 'Sunshine Friendships' as they are known in some places. Hatred is obvious.
So yeah, since two of the four romantic quadrants are romantic feelings of the three universal relationship forms (red: love. black: hatred+friendship) it is technically possible, at least through unusual circumstances, for any sentient species to be involved in them. However, particularly alien species might not have the sort of ideas necessary to grasp 'mental balancing' either from inherent insanity or being entirely psionic in substance, making them completely unable to participate in matespritship. More solitary species might not have the capability to grasp the idea of influencing another's relationship, making them unable to participate in auspitism, at least as the auspice. Cherubs are a good example of the latter.
And yes, that entire massive thing I just typed in was made up on the spot, so you don't have to take it as DTG canon or anything. It seems like a pretty good idea though for guidelines on shipping though. Hmm...

Elven romance is the only way. Heh. I recall a day where a nice fellow marched out into the Levitating Gardens in the city of Sirion and declared his undying love for blacksmithery. Ah, those were the days. Arguably, love could be described as feeling anything more than simple acquaintanceship for a person/animal. I mean, if you are friends with somebody, you do not want them to be hurt in any way, no? That shows you care, and is love. Unconditional love, but love nonetheless. Even with your worst enemies, you care enough to hate them, and, as such, that is also love. Some days I wish I had not gone on the eternal path of Knowledge and Wisdom, and had lived a normal life. If I had, I probably would have been killed in the Ninth Schism. Ah, the possibilities.
