Or, to make it more in-depth, when someone's mind splits in half, then the two sides get mad at one another and fight, and something interesting happens.
Nimbleguy explained it quite well. It's when two split personalities (or splits) battle for dominance. Only one survives.
But that's the short definition. Here's a brief history of the Shatter.
Shatters (and split personalities) were a big thing back in Act 2. I was summoned to the Battlefield as an entity, and gained powers equivalent to a First Guardian because I run this thread. As the Act went on, I began to manifest a new personality, called Split. I called my own personality Build. The two of us constantly fought over the smallest things.
Eventually, we both got so sick of each other that we Shattered. Normally, a Shatter only takes place in the mind. But since I was a First Guardian, me and Split manifested into our own bodies! An epic battle took place, and I won (thanks to the players' help) and killed Split. However, Doc Scratch S u c k e r punched me (or shot me) with his Deudly Magnum, killing ME and making him the new controller of the Narrative.
So that was the first Shatter. It was arguably the biggest one, and the one that had the most influence over the story. It led to me dying (which was prophesised), Scratch taking over the Narrative, the Scratch Manor sidequest occurring, and the Invasion taking over almost the entire server.
No big deal.
Two Shatters happened after that. Nimbleguy had one during the Scratch of Act 2 and Intermission 2. And Modpack is having one now, between his own personality, HIM, and CHAOS. The last one looks to be an extremely interesting fight. I'm betting on Modpack winning, but some of you might think differently. Place your bets now!
